What is a massage?
Massages involve the manipulation of muscle and connective tissues to enhance function and aid healing.  There are over 30 different kinds of massage worldwide some of which include acupressure, ayurvedic, deep tissue, reflexology and hot stone massage amongst others.

What is the procedure involved in having a massage?
The application of lotions, oils and gels are widely used to aid manipulation and for their aromatherapy effects.

What are the risks?
Complications can arise where you suffer from an allergic reaction to the oil, lotion or gel used.  The treatment provider may also be at fault if they have failed to check if you are taking any regular medication or have any health problems which put you at a greater risk of allergic reaction or adverse effects.

Some more specific risks of massages include:

  • Pain and discomfort if the incorrect technique has been chosen for you
  • Rashes from a reaction to the oils, lotions or gels used
  • Burns at the site of application (where a hot stone massage method has been used)
  • Scarring in cases of severe reaction

You may be able to make a claim for compensation if the massage therapist has failed to check any previous allergic reactions to the ingredients in the lotions, gels or oils they have used.
