Tummy Tuck

What is a tummy tuck?
This is a procedure to make the abdomen firmer and involves the removal of excess skin and fat from the middle and lower part of the abdomen. They are among the five most commonly requested cosmetic procedures. This type of surgery is not a replacement for traditional weight loss techniques and is usually requested by those that have sagging skin after pregnancy or weight loss.

What is the procedure involved in having a tummy tuck?
Usually a long horizontal incision is made in the pubic area, sometimes extending from one hip to another. After the incision is made, any excess skin is removed between the navel and pubic area. The upper part of the abdomen is then stretched down. The navel has to be repositioned also. Muscles can also be tightened and excess fat can be removed with liposuction. Finally the surgeon will stitch the skin back together and sometimes tubes are inserted under the skin to drain excess fluid for a short time to drain fluid from the wounds.

What are the risks of having a tummy tuck?
Complications that can affect anyone who has surgery include an adverse reaction to the anaesthetic, excessive bleeding and risk of infection. There are also a number of complications that are specifically associated with any cosmetic ear surgery. These are all recognised risks, but sometimes poor management of these complications can give grounds for a claim for compensation.

Risks specific to tummy tucks include:

  • Blood clots, particularly in women taking birth control pills
  • Nerve damage
  • Poor wound healing and excessive scarring

If you have undergone a tummy tuck procedure and have suffered with physical problems as a result of that surgery you may be entitled to make a claim for compensation. If your surgeon has not taken sufficient care and skill during the surgery or has not provided you with proper advice in your consultation before the surgery has taken place, you may also be entitled to make a claim for compensation. You could be entitled to claim for the costs of any further corrective surgery that is required.
