Ear Surgery (Otoplasty)

What is ear surgery?
Ear surgery, or ostoplasty / pinnaplasty is a type of surgery used to combat or correct misshapen or prominent ears.

What is the procedure?
This is a process which involves surgically correcting or changing the shape of a person’s ear. If the surgery is requested for aesthetic reasons, for example the way in which the ears may stick out, stitches are inserted to pin the ears back. The surgery may also be required for medical reasons, for example where the ear needs to be reconstructed.

What are the risks of ear surgery?
Complications that can affect anyone who has surgery include an adverse reaction to the anaesthetic, excessive bleeding and risk of infection. There are also a number of complications that are specifically associated with any cosmetic ear surgery. These are all recognised risks, but sometimes poor management of these complications can give grounds for a claim for compensation.

Risks specific to cosmetic ear surgery can include:

  • The need for further corrective surgery to correct the incorrect positioning of the ears
  • Delayed wound healing
  • Numbness and alteration in sensitivity
  • Asymmetry
  • Pigmentation of the skin – sometimes the ear may darken in colour slightly

If you have suffered with any of the problems listed above as a result of a poorly carried out procedure, you may have a claim for compensation if your surgeon has not taken sufficient care and skill during the surgery or has not provided you with proper advice in your consultation before the surgery has taken place. You may also be able to claim for the costs of any further corrective surgery that is required.
